Greetings! - welcome to our farm's homepage.
We're located in Jackson County, Indiana, just a few miles south of the more famous, tourist-ridden Brown County. We are surrounded by the Hoosier National Forest, and located 45 minutes from Indiana University at Bloomington.
The steep ridges of our farm are the first hills beyond the glaciated sections of the state. As the glaciers melted, these steep knobs caught the windblown glacial silt, known as loess. Unlike other parts of the southern hills, we have deep and reasonably fertile soils that suport a variety of specialty crops. Moreover, the steep hills drain cold air in the spring and fall, keeping us frost-free for up to six-months per year. Our southern slopes host species common in Kentucky and southward, such as chestnut and scarlet oaks, yellow-poplar, persimmon, sassafras, pawpaw, tupelo, and umbrella magnolia, while our cooler ravines feature northern hardwoods such as beech, ash, cherry and sugar maple. Red, white, and black oaks are also found throughout, thus our name "Five Oaks" - one each of five species.
In production since 2000, we continue to expand our orchards and explore forest farming whilst growing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables using organic methods.
